Filipino reference of the day #2

(This was actually a few days ago but it's new to you, right?)

I was listening to my favorite morning show, Fernando in the Morning. Dat Phan, a Vietnamese comedian, was on the show to promote his comedy tour. A lot of his jokes are Asian-oriented (Hehehe. I said "Asian" and "Orient" in the same sentence. I've just been kicked out of the club.)
The two DJs, Fernando and Greg, asked Dat why some Asian ethnicities seem favored over others. They gave an example of when they asked one of their Asian coworkers if he was Korean and the guy yelled, "I'm Chinese, not Korean!" Fernando said, "It was like we called him a horrible name or something." Dat Phan responded that it has a lot to do with people always grouping Asian cultures together and not bothering to know the difference.

Greg asked, "What about Filipinos? They don't look like other Asians."

Fernando said, "Yah, they look like a little bit of this and a little bit of that."

Dat replied, "They're like Asian curry. A whole lot of different things, a whole lot of different spices."

Greg agreed, "Yes, and they're very delicious, too."

I have to agree - The Man is quite delicious:)

Yesssss. The man is fabulously delicious!

This is a dumn white-person thing to say, but I don't know why "Oriental" or "Orient" terms are un-PC. I of course never say "Oriental" but have never understood why it's not used.

Help?

LOL- Asian= person.Oriental= a rug.
Of, course I call folk Celestials like in the Louisa May Alcott novel, but that's cuz it makes my WhiteGhostDevil giggle.
"I ain't calling no grown man Delicious ;)

Uh oh, I don't like curry. Does that mean I have to surrender my filipino card? Guess I could just be a non-descript Asian.

LOL, MsLips! Our Dad used to joke I was his Latino baby, Lulu was his Viet baby, and the only true Pinoy was brotherman... hahaha! Cuz I think Sister is a lovely example of filipino beauty.

Ahhh I love to be educated about what not to say when I am around you. I am so incredibly un PC, I think I have lived in this town too long.

cajohnson - thanks for visiting!

tater - our blogs are ALL about TMI ;)

tel - glad they were able to answer your Q. And I knew you were on board about The Man's deliciousness!

ddoll - who said that?? Bernie Mac? i know it's one of the Kings of Comedy ;) and thanks for answering tel's Q!

mslips - i feel you on that! didn't we have a deep conversation about the whole "mistisa" thing? well, i know i got into a big ol' conversation with someone my last year in HS about how people always thought i was mistisa (either filipino & mexican, filipino & white, or hawaiian) and how it's considered flattering. why? why is it such a compliment for our people to think we're OTHER ethnicities? why isn't it OK, if not BEAUTIFUL to look full-blooded filipino whether that means being dark, having a flatter nose, etc? well, when I was in PCN, i remember they said they partnered me with Mitch b/c we were both "light." that's when i thought, dammit, that's not right, why is that a compliment? so i went and sunbathed ALL DAMN DAY w/ tel (ate cheese, drank wine and smoked) and was a little brown nut by the end of the day.

ddoll - Yup, dad got me when he was in Vietnam!:D And thanks for the Las Fashionistas tip! xo

I was SO EFFIN' jealous of you that day! My ass was burned, but your ass was a brown goddess.

Do you blame me for thinking you were Hawaiian? You looked like you belonged on a beach with a flower in your hair. (Little did I know you could be on the beach in the Philippines with a flower in your hair - hell, I didn't even know where the hell the Philippines were!)

Weird that white girls spend so much money to be tan, while some brown girls try to bleach their skin. How ridiculous is that?

My only answer in defense of the whities is that brown fat looks better than white, pastey fat.

Oh my sweet Tel, of COURSE I don't blame you. You weren't being lazy, you didn't know! Like you said, you had never even heard of the Philippines before. Now it's raining Filipinos on you! Plus, how can I not LOVE a lovely caucasian who knows how to cook Pansit?!?!?
